Existing core competencies
The area of Bitterfeld-Wolfen is for more than 100 years internationally known location for chemistry. The good conditions for the development of the chemical industry were cheap energy through large coal deposits and the natural water resources of the river Mulde.
This was confirmed in 1893 independently by the companies "Elektrochemische Werke G.m.b.H zu Berlin", "Chemische Fabrik Elektron AG, Frankfurt/M." and "Actien-Gesellschaft für Anilin-Fabrikation (Agfa)" which started business here. Since 1925 were these establishments and their spin-offs owned by the I.G. Farbenindustrie AG (IG Farben), back then the largest German chemical monopoly. After the breakup of the IG Farben in the year 1946 until the political change in 1989 was this area marked by the next two large chemical plants:
Through years of research, development and production potential of these companies a rich knowledge has been preserved in the region that determines the structure of many companies even today.
Start-up companies:
Since 1990 settled over 360 companies, of which more than 40 chemical and chemical-related companies such as Bayer Bitterfeld GmbH, Guardian Flachglas GmbH and Heraeus Tenevo AG in this area.
In 1997, the ChemicalPark Bitterfeld Wolfen, today P-D ChemiePark Bitterfeld Wolfen, was founded, which covers an area of approximately 1200 ha. Many of the residential companies, mostly small and medium-sized, are spin-offs of the former large-scale chemical plants.
